Tahini is the heart of many Middle Eastern and Mediterranean recipes—rich, creamy, and deeply nutty. Made simply from toasted sesame seeds and a touch of oil, this homemade version is fresher and more flavorful than anything store-bought. Whether you're whipping up hummus, dressings, or sauces, this tahini brings depth and a beautiful texture to your cooking.
And the best part? It takes just minutes to make.
Kitchen Tools
Frying pan or skillet
Hand blender or food processor
Ingredients
200 g / 7 oz sesame seeds
2 tablespoons neutral vegetable oil (e.g., sunflower or grapeseed)
Instructions
Toast the sesame seeds: Heat a dry pan over medium heat. Add the sesame seeds and toast them for 2–3 minutes, stirring frequently, until they’re golden and aromatic. Be careful not to burn them.
Cool slightly and blend: Transfer the toasted seeds to a food processor or blender. Add the oil and blend in 30-second intervals, scraping down the sides as needed. This prevents overheating and helps achieve a smooth texture.
Process to a cream: Continue blending until the mixture turns into a smooth, pourable paste. This can take a few minutes depending on your blender.
Store and enjoy: Transfer to a clean jar or airtight container.
Serving Ideas
Stir into hummus, baba ghanoush, or salad dressings
Drizzle over grain bowls, roasted vegetables, or falafel
Use in baking for a nutty twist in cookies or brownies
Storage
Store in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 1 month. Stir before each use if separation occurs.
This homemade Tahini is a creamy, nutrient-rich spread you’ll use again and again—full of natural flavor and crafted with care.
